Trail Work Day Scheduled for Saturday, 9/11/10
September 6, 2010
Our fourth trail work day of the season is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010.
We plan to meet at the clubhouse and then head out to the Berlin Trail where it crosses through Memorial Field just southeast of the Berlin High School parking lot. From there we can walk into the work area.
The section of the Berlin Trail that runs between the Berlin High School parking lot and Memorial Field currently passes through a flood plain of the Dead River. It is only 266' long, but almost every winter, this trail has to be shut down due to high water.
We plan to move the trail to the bank along the Dead River, which will keep it out of the flood plain and out of any rising water during the winter.
To protect the flood plain area, we plan to install silt fencing backed up with bales of hay to keep out any dirt or construction debris. Once the trail has stabilized (probably next summer), then the silt fencing and hay bales will be removed.
We also need to cut back a few 6" diameter trees along the river bank in the path of the relocated trail. Other small brush will be removed by the excavator during the building process.
Materials to bring: Please bring your own snacks and drinks along with a shovel, work gloves and a small sledge hammer. Part of the work area is muddy so we recommend that you bring rubber boots.
Club members will supply two ATV's that will be used to transport hay bales into the site. But getting to the site is easy; its only a few hundred feet from the nearest parking lot so ATV's are not needed to get into the site.
Meeting Info: Meet at 8:30am at the White Mt. Ridge Runners clubhouse on Rt. 110 in Berlin, NH - across from Jericho Motorsports about 3 miles west of Berlin center.
Please send email to larry@twolakeslodge.com or call Larry at 508-366-1172 if you can attend.
