LANCASTER, N.H. (AP) -- Officials say a 99-year-old wooden covered bridge linking New Hampshire and Vermont has been closed after it was damaged when a tractor trailer truck drove over it.
Lancaster town manager Ed Samson says the damage to the Mount Orne bridge was extensive.
Lancaster police say a California trucker crossed the bridge over the Connecticut River on Wednesday evening after the driver's dispatcher told him it was the way to go.
The Caledonian Record newspaper says the driver didn't stop after allegedly striking the bridge, but a Vermont resident spotted him picking pieces of wood from his vehicle. The driver was then taken back to Lancaster. He is facing charges.
The bridge is owned by the town of Lancaster.
