MOUNT WASHINGTON — Not only is it the home of the world’s worst weather, but Mt. Washington also boasts the most unpredictable. This point was proven once again on July 1, at 12:45 p.m. as the Mt. Washington Auto Road closed due to snow. The Auto Road remained closed for nearly two hours until the snow dissipated and regular operations resumed.

Snow fell lightly early in the morning and seemed quite innocuous - incongruous with the date, but still no reason to think it would amount to much. However, after a short break in the weather, snow resumed around noon putting Mt. Washington Auto Road staff on alert.

Always erring on the side of safety, Mt. Washington Auto Road management decided to close the Auto Road to traffic as road conditions became slippery as a slushy snow built up on the road surface.

Snow has been reported in every month of the year on Mt. Washington, but rarely in an amount that would cause the Mt. Washington Auto Road to close. So instead of a tranquil summer day, the summit of Mt. Washington was shrouded in winter with still 178 shopping days until Christmas.

Forecasts for the weekend are calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the 80’s in the valleys. Normal summer operations at the Mt. Washington Auto Road continue daily from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.MtWashingtonAutoRoad.com or call 603.466.3988.
