The Coos County Democrat
A new All-Terrain Vehicle Club has been
formed in the Colebrook, Stewartstown, Columbia area of Coös County. Craig
Washburn of Colebrook was elected the first President.
The club is named “Metallak ATV Club.” It is named after a Native American of
the area. He was the last survivor of a band of Native Americans known as the
Androscoggin.
The band, part of the Abenaki nation, inhabited the upper Androscoggin and
Magalloway rivers along the northern border of New Hampshire and Maine. Blinded
by accidents in his later years, Metallak died in 1853 at the reputed age of 120
in Stewartstown.
The name was chosen from 41 public submitted suggestions. The winner received a
$100 gift certificate, compliments of First Run Home Entertainment of Colebrook.
The winner has asked to remain anonymous but has given the gift back to the club
for further use to increase membership. There will be a club meeting and
membership drive in January.
